The eight phases in ~29.5 days
New Moon → Waxing Crescent → First Quarter → Waxing Gibbous → Full Moon → Waning Gibbous → Last Quarter → Waning Crescent, then around again every 29.53 days (a synodic month). Waxing means growing toward full, waning shrinking toward new; the illumination percentage above tells you exactly how much of the disc is lit. Photographers: full-moon rises are most dramatic in the 20 minutes after moonrise, while the moon sits low and orange — check the moonrise time here, then scout with golden hour in mind.
