Your places never touch a server. The only way data leaves the device is a file you export.

The practical consequences: places survive reloads and offline use, but they belong to this browser on this device — clear the browser's site data and they are gone. Where are my saved places stored?

In this browser's local storage on this device — never on our servers. That's why they survive offline but don't sync between devices; use the GPX/KML export to move or back them up.

What happens if I clear my browser data?

Saved places are deleted with it. Export a backup first — the GPX/KML/GeoJSON/CSV files re-import into most map apps, and CSV keeps your notes readable anywhere.
