The “right now” problem: locating while moving
In a train, bus or car, a single fix is outdated the moment you read it. Two tools here are built for motion: press the locate button again at any time for an instant re-fix (the map pin and every format update in place), or open the GPS speedometer, which uses continuous watchPosition streaming — the same API ride-apps use — to show live speed, distance and position without re-tapping. Neither sends your track anywhere; the stream stays in the browser tab.
Why two people in the same room can get different answers
Ask “where am I now” on two phones side by side and you may see pins 20 m apart. Different GPS chipsets, different Wi-Fi databases, different cached fixes, and different permission levels (Precise vs Approximate on iOS 14+, coarse vs fine on Android 12+) all shift the answer. The accuracy circle is the honest comparison: a 5 m circle beats a 500 m circle regardless of whose pin “looks” right.
